I don’t know the first thing about hot tubs. What features should I look for?The most important feature to look for in a hot tub is functionality. After that, shop for performance, comfort, and style. Your hot tub will be part of your life for years to come, so it’s a good idea to choose features you’ll be happy with down the road. Here are some of the basic questions on features you should ask your dealer: Is it large enough to fit my family? How well does it keep the water clean? Who is the manufacturer, and how reliable are they? How easy is it to operate this model? What are this model’s typical operating costs? Will I use it for backyard entertainment, or just for quiet time alone? Will I use it alone or with other people? What accessories come with this model? What other accessories do you recommend? A good dealer will be happy to answer your questions and help you find the hot tub that suits you best. They can even arrange a time for you to stop by and test how it feels to sit in the spa, dry or wet. They’ll be your partner down the road as well, providing you the service you need year after year.

What are the main wellness benefits of regular hot tub use? While soaking in warm water, the body experiences both psychological and mental changes. As our circulation improves we begin to think more clearly. Use your hot tub 4-6 days a week for about 15-20 minutes to get better results in 4 key areas of your life: Better Outlook. Soaking in a hot tub allows you to escape from daily stressors, like work and multitasking. Time reserved for yourself helps you recover emotionally and maintain a positive outlook on life. Better Relationships.Whether you want time to reconnect with your spouse or partner, or you are curious about what your teen has been up to lately, spending time in the hot tub can help everyone open up. Without distracting digital devices getting in the way, you’ll find the door to real conversations opens wide in a hot tub. Better Muscle Recovery. The buoyancy of water reduces the impact of gravity on skeletal and muscle tissue, alleviating tension on the body. Combined with warmth, buoyancy in a tub of water loosens muscles before a workout, or soothes them afterward. Better Sleep.Spending time in a hot tub or hot bath prior to going to sleep will help separate the day’s activities from the night of rest ahead. Some studies suggest that soaking in hot water can ease the transition into a deeper sleep by reducing tension and stress.

I’ve heard hot tubs can be unsanitary. Is it hard to keep the water clean and safe?Without proper treatment, filtration, and maintenance, a hot tub can become unsanitary. Fortunately, innovation and technology have made water care easier. It only takes a small investment of time and energy to keep your water crystal clear and safe to use. In addition to changing your water and filters regularly, there are several different treatment options to keep your water pure. The traditional water care method is chlorinating your water. When using a chlorine system, be sure to keep an eye on your levels so your water stays pure. A downside to chlorine is that it can irritate the skin and eyes of some people. Fortunately, these people have other options. Bromine has a lower pH than chlorine, making it easier on the skin and eyes while still doing a great job of killing algae, viruses, and other contaminants. Be sure to completely drain and clean your tub when switching from chlorine to bromine to prevent an unwanted chemical reaction. Ozone systems neutralize contaminants by injecting ozone into the water, while a non-chlorine oxidizer combined with other minerals cleans the water and slows bacterial growth. This option is very mild on the skin and eyes. Salt systems sanitize water by creating an odorless and non-irritating form of chlorine. Harsh odors are virtually eliminated, and spa water is gentler on eyes and skin. This option rewards spa owners with lower ongoing expenses and less maintenance time. Care is simpler and the water feels soft and natural. Caldera® Spas Utopia® and Paradise® Series comes ready for the FreshWater® Salt System, which provides the benefits of salt with a disposable cartridge that lasts for 4 months and can be replaced in seconds – no tools required.

I am sensitive to chemicals. Will I get a skin reaction from using a hot tub?Every human being is different. Similar to food, and environmental sensitivities, people can be sensitive to chemicals. This doesn’t always preclude them from experiencing the benefits of a hot tub. Many people experience skin reactions in public hot tubs. The beauty of owning your own hot tub allows you to create and maintain the most clean, clear and sparkling water possible. People should never assume that they will experience sensitivity in ALL hot tubs. Having control over your water quality is one of the biggest benefits of owning a hot tub. Follow a troubleshooting protocol before using a hot tub: 1) Determine the quality of the hot tub water Use a water test strip to measure the levels of sanitizer, alkalinity and acidity. This provides you a starting point from to know if the chemical levels are too high or need an adjustment. 2) Treat the hot tub water Use the information you gained from measuring the various levels to determine what is needed to remedy the issue and bring your water back into balance. A scoop of this and a lower level of that may make a huge difference to sensitive skin. 3) Change sanitizers Chlorine can be harsh to someone’s skin. Switching to bromine or other enzyme-based, chlorine-free sanitizers may be your remedy. Some hot tubs come equipped with ozone-based systems that make it possible to sanitize the hot tub with significantly less chlorine or bromine. The important thing to remember is if someone’s skin is getting irritated listen to what the body is saying. A small adjustment may allow a friend or family member to experience great health and enjoyment in your hot tub. It may take some time to determine what is best, but it’s time well spent. 4) Drain, refill and reset If a person didn’t have a skin reaction when the water was fresh but developed one as the water aged, this may be an indication it’s time to drain and refill the hot tub. Simply experiment to determine when you should drain and refill to eliminate skin reactions.

How Can My Hot Tub Help Ease Joint Pain? When natural remedies were the only available options, warm-water immersion was the best solution for muscle and joint pain. Many hundreds of years later, it’s still considered a very effective treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues – and a hot tub is one of the most convenient ways to get it. According to the Arthritis Foundation, Regular sessions in your hot tub keep joints moving. It restores and preserves strength and flexibility and also protects your joints from further damage.” Why Does Warm Water Help Joints? Because water is buoyant, it reduces gravity’s pull on joints. When submerged, the body weighs about 90 percent less. Weight and compression of the joints, which are often the cause of pain, are diminished while still providing 360-degree support. The warm water also raises body temperature and increases circulation, which encourages better movement. “It makes you feel better,” said Dr. Bruce E. Becker, director of the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute at Washington State University, in an Arthritis Foundation article. “It makes the joints looser. It reduces pain and it seems to have a somewhat prolonged effect that goes beyond the period of immersion.” How Long Should I Soak in a hot tub? According to Dr. Becker’s research, the advantages of warm water immersion develop and reach their maximum benefit after about 20 minutes. Research such as Dr. Becker’s is one of the foundation blocks of our 20-minute renewal blog and the wide range of personal wellness benefits associated with daily hot tub use. How Warm Should The Water Be? For joint pain relief, soak in warm water between 92 degrees and 100 degrees. How Can I Maximize Hot Tub Benefits? Use the jets! The massage you get in a hot tub releases muscle tension and increases circulation. Soft tissue becomes more flexible and movement becomes easier. Caldera Spas hot tubs are designed to provide massage to all major muscle groups as you move seat to seat. We call it Hot Tub Circuit Therapy, and it can provide a full-body massage during that 20-minute soak. While immersed, you can also try gentle stretching and simple range-of-movement exercises that can help alleviate pain and stiffness. What is the difference between a standard base, solid base, and mortar base? There are three types of bases- Standard, Solid, and Mortar. Solid and Mortar bases are always considered "custom". There is no significant price difference between a standard or custom base, the only major price jump you will see is the material cost- whether you are getting marble or granite in any solid surface material. A standard base comes in a range of sizes and drain locations based on common sizes. These bases have a 5" tall 4" deep integrated curb and drywall lip on all 4 sides of the base. This type of base cannot be modified in any way. Solid Bases are 1.5" thick, sit directly on the subfloor, and are available in custom sizes. Curbs are loose and added separately and can be modified by your contractor based on your preferences. These bases, however, are only available with a center drain. Mortar Bases are 3/4" thick and are available in custom sizes with complex design capabilities, offering offset drain locations, in either center or center 3rd of the base itself. All bases have a nonslip texture applied and are always pitched for proper draining.

How do I clean my shower surfaces? We recommend Scrubbing Bubbles to clean granite or marble shower walls, bases, and other surfaces. For Basco shower doors, if you have Aquaglide added to your door, you can only clean with Maintain Cleaner by Basco, which is available for purchase online and in-store. Any other cleaner will damage the glass. If you have Showerguard added to your Basco door, you can use any cleaning product for your door. However, we still recommend Maintain shower cleaner or Windex.
